NASSAU, THE BAHAMAS – Asia Saunders, says like many women in The Bahamas, when she was diagnosed with fibroids, she was given limited solutions for relief.

NASSAU, THE BAHAMAS – This month is recognized as Fibroids Awareness Month, a time to share information as well as support and encourage the thousands of women that live with fibroids.

Kristina Dragovich from Our News interviewed Dr. Mikhail Higgins and Tamisha Knowles at Family Medicine Center. Tamisha is one of Dr. Higgins’ patients who recently had the innovative minimally-invasive, non-surgical fibroids treatment – and she says it changed her life!

In July 2021, Dr. Mikhail Higgins collaborated with Family Medicine Center to introduce to The Bahamas, a safe, innovative, minimally-invasive alternative to surgery for the treatment of fibroids.

Uterine fibroid embolization (UFE) is a minimally-invasive, uterus-saving procedure that offers quicker, easier recovery than surgery. Women in The Bahamas who have had this procedure are calling it a miracle and “life-changing”.

In July 2021, Dr. Mikhail Higgins performed the first uterine fibroid embolization ever to be done in The Bahamas. This is a service that is now available to women in The Bahamas and The Caribbean through Family Medical Center.

Dr. Mikhail Higgins is the country’s first board-certified interventional radiologist. He provides innovative new medical techniques, previously unavailable in The Bahamas, particularly in the treatment of uterine fibroids.

One of the most common surgeries in The Bahamas is the removal of uterine fibroids. Chances are you or someone you know has been diagnosed with fibroids, but now a non-surgical option is available locally. Kristina Dragovich reports on the country’s first Interventional Radiologist, Dr. Mikhail Higgins.
